For as funny as it was to see the Blue Jays lose to the Royals by the staggering score of 20-1, the wind was taken out of most of the mirth because the Yankees just didn’t have a good night in Baltimore. They didn’t fall further back in the AL East, but with only eight games remaining and three back (effectively four given the tiebreaker), failing to gain ground is essentially losing ground. It’s long looked like the top Wild Card seed will be the Yankees’ optimal outcome given their midsummer slump, and that may be coming to pass — if they can fend off Boston and the other Wild Card opponents.
