ON THIS DAY IN 1896 , the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Travelers and tourists are now turning toward the autumn resorts. Experienced globe trotters enjoy this season of the year away from home more than any other period and those who live close to nature and possess a lively appreciation of the marvelous beauties wrought by late September dews, the freshening October winds and the early frosts, seldom allow the season to pass without a sojourn in some rural spot. Possibly no section of the country within so short a distance from the city is so naturally adopted as an autumn retreat as the line of the Blue Ridge, starting at the Delaware Water Gap and extending up to the Pocono mountains. Throughout the entire district nature may be seen in her wildest, grandest aspect.”
