FLORISSANT, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Stretching into Friday night, gas leak and odor calls kept some fire departments in St. Louis County and Spire busy.
The calls started coming in Thursday night, according to the Florissant Valley Fire Protection District fire chief, and have continued well into Friday across St. Louis County and into St. Charles County, but most of these calls have been concentrated in North County.
Spire said the issue was an over-injection of Mercaptan. It’s a harmless chemical added to natural gas to give it that rotten egg smell. This happened Thursday night during routine maintenance, according to the utility provider.
The smell of it caught the attention of a lot of people.
