CHARLEVOIX – Karrie and Aaron Gaffney rushed to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

All they knew were some basic facts: The Charlevoix boys golf team was involved in a head-on crash in Benzie County on April 27, and their son, Joe, was in the van. But they didn’t know his condition. So, Karrie called Joe’s best friend, who was in the crash but conscious.

“You got to tell me, is he alive?’” Karrie asked.

“He was really in pain,” the friend said. “He's screaming but they're bringing him in the ambulance.’”
