Queensland Police have launched an investigation after a baby boy was killed in a crash on the Gold Coast on Sunday.

The infant died at Gold Coast University Hospital following the collision, which occurred near a ramp on the side of the northbound M1, near Smith Street at Gaven.

Police said a silver Jeep Cherokee was parked on the side of the motorway when it was struck by a grey Toyota Hilux about 2.50am.

The baby was inside the Jeep at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Jeep, a 24-year-old woman from Ormeau Hills, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A 51-year-old Loganlea man, who was behind the wheel of the Hilux, suffered minor injuries.

The forensic crash unit is investigating the incident.
