NAUGATUCK, Conn. — On a sunlit Saturday morning, applause echoed across Veterans Field at Naugatuck High School, as the newly refurbished track was unveiled, now officially named the Col. Ralph S. Roper Jr. Track.
It's more than a new name on an oval of rubber and lanes, it’s a permanent tribute to a man who has been the heartbeat of Naugatuck High School track and field for over three decades.
Coach Ralph Roper’s story is one of resilience, excellence and quiet heroism. For 32 years - 23 as head coach and nine as an assistant - he led Naugatuck’s indoor and outdoor track teams with unwavering discipline and humility. Under his leadership, the Greyhounds racked up 53 NVL championships, including 40 with Roper as head coach, and produced state champions and national-level competitors.
