Newark Police are crediting a ShotSpotter device for quickly alerting them to gunfire that erupted in the city’s South Ward late Saturday night.

According to preliminary reports, the system activated around 10 p.m. in the vicinity of 738 Clinton Avenue after a gunman fired multiple rounds in the community.

When officers arrived, they recovered several shell casings at the scene.

A search of the area revealed no victims, and no injuries were reported. Authorities said the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

The incident remains under investigation as detectives work to determine a possible motive behind the gunfire.
