YORK COUNTY, Pa. — For athletes like Max Malec, their first time taking the ice changed everything.
“The first time I got on the ice it felt like I was flying,” said Malec, a sled hockey athlete for the State College Coyotes. “I just became obsessed and it was a sport that I decided to run with.”
Malec plays sled hockey, an adapted version of ice hockey.
Sled hockey has athletes sit on a specialized sled on blades while using two sticks to propel themselves and play the puck.
“As individuals with disabilities, we’re not limited in any way shape or form, especially in sport,” said Malec. “We can play sports like sled hockey and do a ton of other adaptive sports.”
