DETROIT -- Veteran starting pitcher Charlie Morton was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
His spot will go to right-hander Tanner Rainey, who was selected from Triple-A Toledo.
Morton, 41, was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline. In nine starts with the Tigers, Morton was 2-3 with a 7.09 ERA in 39 1/3 innings with 47 strikeouts and 23 walks.
Morton was roughed up by the Braves in a 10-1 loss on Friday night at Comerica Park , his final start with the Tigers.
Afterwards, Morton said it was “heartbreaking” to let down his team in a critical game.
With seven games left in the season, Morton was unlikely to get another start given his recent struggles and the Tigers opted to use his roster spot on an arm that could help as soon as Sunday.
