West 7th Street in downtown St. Paul has fully reopened months after a 35-foot-deep sinkhole emerged in the street.
On Friday, the City of St. Paul announced the street had reopened between Chestnut Street to Walnut Street following four months of repairs.
The street was limited to one-lane of traffic when a sinkhole appeared on May 8.
The sinkhole was caused by soil erosion above a sewer tunnel, eventually leading the roadway and soil to collapse in on it, the city says.
Repairs involved removing debris, cleaning the tunnel and repairing the roadway. Repair crews also reinforced the tunnel’s ceiling and walls.
The tunnel was built in 1879, according to the city.
