Gov. Josh Shapiro joined the debate over the suspension of late night TV host Jimmy Kimmel, saying in an interview aired on a national news program Sunday that the Trump administration is undermining freedom of speech and using the “long arm of the federal government” to do so.

“Without question, they’re trying to stifle dissent,” said Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor, when asked on NBC’s Meet the Press about his take on the issue.

The late night comic’s show was pulled off the air by ABC indefinitely following backlash from affiliated broadcasters and the Trump-appointed head of the Federal Communications Commission over the comedian’s remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on a campus in Utah.
