WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- A Maryland State Police helicopter hoisted a hiker to safety Saturday after they had a medical emergency atop the Maryland Heights Overlook cliff, officials said.

Just minutes after 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 20, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command responded to the cliff to help a hiker who was having an apparent medical emergency.

Due to the severity of the hiker's condition and the challenging terrain, the helicopter was requested to perform an aerial hoist.

At the scene, pilots were able to maneuver the Leonardo Agusta Westland AW-139 helicopter about 125 feet above the cliff, lowering a paramedic to the ground to help lift the hiker up into the aircraft.

The helicopter then flew the hiker to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown for treatment.
