SOUTH BEND — Before Saturday’s weather-interrupted marathon win over rebuilding Purdue , Notre Dame football had given just five total snaps to its well-regarded freshman class.

All of those belonged to cornerback Mark Zackery IV , the reigning Indiana Mr. Football from Ben Davis, and they all came in brief cameos due to starters’ injuries.
