After touching down on Sunday in New York, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement at 11pm (AEST) that said Australia has formally recognised Palestine.
Australia now joins the likes of Canada, France, and the UK in recognising the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly.
Mr Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong issued a joint statement on Sunday, with the Prime Minister saying Australia’s action “recognises the legitimate and long-held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own”.
