MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - With school back in session, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin School Bus Association are teaming up to remind drivers of the dangers of passing stopped school buses.

Operation Safe Stop runs Sept. 22–26 across the state. The weeklong enforcement and education campaign is aimed at protecting children as they get on and off buses, while holding drivers accountable if they fail to stop.

“Every time that school bus is on the side of the road with its red lights flashing, there’s kids either getting on or off that bus,” Sgt. Craig Morehouse with Wisconsin State Patrol said.

In 2024 alone, more than 1,200 citations were issued to Wisconsin drivers for illegally passing school buses, according to the State Patrol.
