Anthony Albanese has made a splash in New York but another Australian leader is also making waves with his message of compassion for children in conflict zones.

Pastor Bill Crews is visiting the United Nations as one of three UNICEF Global Faith Envoys to encourage religious communities to give charitably for children suffering in wars and famines.

"With the cutting of USAID, we're trying to get faith communities to get on board to help kids all around the world," the 81-year-old told AAP from New York on Monday ahead of his advocacy meetings.

"What we're trying to do is energise faith communities, not just talk about loving compassion but to actually exhibit it."
