DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Dr. Ted Fritsche of Madeline Island has been a volunteer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary since 1978.
In those forty-plus years of service, he’s saved a few lives on Lake Superior, earning him the Jim Munger Award for exceptional service.
At Saturday’s ceremony in Pequot Lakes, Dave Anderson, who received the award in 2021 and is Commander of the Auxiliary Division in the Northland, was honored to present the award to Dr. Fritsche.
As a physician, he has often been called on to treat sailors on ore boats when medical emergencies arise.
“They used to take me out there in the 40-footer and nobody died on me, but we got them all back safely,” said Dr. Fritsche.
The award is named after Dr. Jim Munger of Duluth.
