Brian Hernandez Jr. — the jockey who pulled off the Derby Double, winning both the Kentucky Oaks and Derby in 2024 aboard horses trained by Kenny McPeek — was thrown from his mount during the third race at Churchill Downs on Sept. 21 and seriously injured.

The horse, Sgt. Garcia, lost its jockey after being bumped at the start of the six-furlong, or 3/4-mile, race on a sloppy, but sealed dirt track, according to horse racing data listed by Equibase.

The race was a $30,000-maiden claiming race for 2-year-olds, a race for rookie thoroughbreds.

Hernandez, considered one of the top jockeys, is in intensive care being treated for his injuries, according to a social media post from his wife.
