O’FALLON, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A newborn baby was surrendered to the Safe Haven Baby Box in O’Fallon, Missouri.

“We are grateful this resource was used as intended — to protect the life of a child and provide peace of mind for a parent in need. Everything worked perfectly, and care was started by on-scene firefighter/paramedics”, said Andy Parrish, Assistant Chief.

Monica Kelsey founded Safe Haven Baby Boxes in 2017 to prevent infant abandonment with a safe, anonymous option for surrender. Since then, 67 infants have been surrendered. After a baby is placed in the box, they enter the adoption process.

Missouri has eight Baby Box locations. The box opened in July at O’Fallon Fire Station 3 at 600 Laura Hill Road.
