TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- In the middle of the night a crane lifted up Traverse City’s 30-ton pedestrian bridge and brought it up and away from the anchor points its sat in since 1966.

The pedestrian bridge crossing over U.S. 31. was removed on Saturday, Sept. 20.

All lanes of traffic are reopened as of Monday, Sept. 22. The southern lane shift eliminated the middle turn lane but maintains two lanes of traffic in both eastbound and westbound directions.

Crews from Team Elmers worked under the lights and wrapped up the removal of the bridge and the south side stairs just after midnight, said Stephanie Rosinski, Traverse City and Leelanau state parks supervisor.

“I was just amazed at how smoothly everything went,” she said. “They made it look so easy.”
