WASHINGTON COUNTY, INDIANA, Ind. — A bicyclist was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a collision involving an off-duty police officer in southern Indiana.

At about 4 p.m., Indiana State Police responded to a request from Salem Police Department to investigate a crash at the intersection of Old State Road 56 and North Canton Road, near Canton, according to an ISP news release.

Investigators believe an off-duty Salem officer was driving a police cruiser westbound on Old State Road 56 and was preparing to turn left onto North Canton Road when he failed to see a bicyclist traveling eastbound on Old State Road 56.

The off-duty officer struck the bicyclist with his vehicle, according to ISP officials.
