TROUP, Texas — Deputies seized 44 dogs Friday after investigators discovered what they say was a suspected puppy mill in Smith County.
Emergency crews responded around 11:45 a.m. Sept. 19 to a medical assist call in the 19200 block of FM 345 near Troup. When UT Health EMS and Arp Fire personnel arrived, they reported a strong odor of feces and multiple kenneled and loose dogs. Smith County deputies were called due to concerns about animal cruelty.
Investigators found the dogs had not received food, water or care for at least 12 hours, according to the sheriff’s office. Several were malnourished and suffering from skin conditions, overgrown nails and possible gastrointestinal issues.
