MACON, Ga. — On Monday, the Head of School at the Academy for Classical Education (ACE) announced her retirement. That comes a few days after the school was mired in controversy over not lowering its flag on Sept. 11, and after a proclamations from President Donald Trump and Gov. Brian Kemp.

According to a release, ACE's Governing Board accepted Principal Lara Relyea's retirement on Monday morning. The board thanked Relyea, who spent several years with ACE, for her time with the school. She was named principal in 2024.

The retirement came a week after the Governing Board faced heated comments from parents and the public, after the school chose not to lower its flag to half-staff on Sept. 11, and after proclamations from the United States and State officials.
