BOONE, N.C. (WBTV) - A former player and football coach at Appalachian State University has died .

Shawn Clark -- who was fired as the school’s football coach in December 2024 -- passed away on the evening of Sunday, Sept 21.

Clark just turned 50 years old in August and joined the staff at UCF as the offensive line coach for the 2025 season.

His death came less than two weeks after UCF confirmed that Clark experienced a medical emergency on Sept. 9. The school did not explicitly say what that emergency was, but said he was in stable condition the following day.
