AUSTIN, Texas — Texas' so-called "bathroom bill" has been signed into law.
Gov. Greg Abbott posted a social media video on Monday, showing him signing Senate Bill 8, which was passed during the Legislature's second special session . The legislation is officially known as the "Texas Women's Privacy Act" and is known to many as the "bathroom bill."
The bill requires Texans to only use the bathrooms in government buildings and public schools that align to their biological sex. The law also requires inmates to be housed in correctional facilities according to their biological sex and requires family violence shelters to only provide services to women if their biological sex is female.
The Senate gave final approval to SB 8 on Aug. 19. The House then passed the legislation on Aug. 28
