LEE COUNTY, Texas — Neighbors in Giddings are shocked after finding out Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger was arrested by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers for a DWI on Sept. 21.

"I didn’t think he would do something like that, because he’s such a wonderful sheriff," said Melvin Bamsch, who's lived in Giddings his whole life.

According to the arrest affidavit, a witness noticed Sheriff Durrenberger in his car in the right lane on U.S. 290 with its blinkers on. The witness told investigators he knocked on the window, yelling at Durrenberber to wake up and open the door, but then he drove off.

Durrenberger was then stopped by a Giddings Police Officer and Texas DPS troopers arrived on scene. The trooper said he noticed an alcohol odor and asked the sheriff how many
