(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Zoological Society is asking the City of Sacramento to expand the footprint of the zoo’s Land Park home.

Zoo officials said the expanded footprint would consist of a 1.4-acre parcel on the northern boundary of the zoo, along with a 4.4-acre parcel across Land Park Drive from the zoo.

If approved, the request would increase the zoo's size by 40%, as the current 14.3-acre footprint would expand to 20.1 acres.

The proposal comes after the Sacramento Zoo announced it would not be moving forward with the zoo project in Elk Grove back in April.

According to zoo officials, this would be the largest expansion of the zoo since the 1960s.
