AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A local gas station has been hit with a $10,000 fine after allegations of price gouging during a declared state of emergency related to Hurricane Helene, according to Attorney General Chris Carr.
Customers reported that Smile Grocery, formerly known as Pope’s Grocery, was overcharging for gas.
The Consumer Protection Division launched investigations in response, and based on the findings, Carr says the business violated the Fair Business Practices Act by engaging in price gouging during a declared state of emergency.
