LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Kentucky Derby-winning jockey has been seriously injured after a fall at Churchill Downs.
According to BloodHorse , Hernandez was riding St. Garcia in the third race when the colt injured one of his front legs near the 5/16th pole which caused Hernandez to be thrown to the ground.
Hernandez was taken to UofL Hospital and currently in the intensive care unit. His wife Jamie said in a Facebook post, Hernandez suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a liver laceration which was repaired with a procedure. He is also experiencing bleeding that’s being monitored.
“Jockey life isn’t for the faint of heart. Physically and mentally draining,” Jamie said. “Hug your loved ones tight. Please say extra prayers for Brian tonight.”
