AUGUSTA, Maine — A crow found in Augusta tested positive for West Nile virus, the city said Monday.

The discovery marks the latest in a series of confirmed cases in Maine this year. Birds carrying the virus have also been reported in Cumberland, Kennebec, Sagadahoc, and York counties.

West Nile virus spreads primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito, health officials said.

While most people infected show no symptoms, some experience fever, headaches, body aches, and vomiting. In rare cases, the virus can cause severe neurological illness, including inflammation of the brain, confusion, paralysis, or coma.

People over 60 years old and those with certain medical conditions face the highest risk of severe illness.
