NEWTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Catawba County man was sentenced to up to 10 years in prison Monday for fentanyl trafficking and injuring a sheriff’s deputy.
According to the District Attorney’s Office, 29-year-old Daniel Austin Rhoney, of Vale, was sentenced to serve eight to 10 years in state prison following his guilty plea last week in Catawba County Superior Court.
Court documents show Rhoney was the passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop on March 25. He was not wearing a seat belt, initially gave sheriff’s deputies a fake name and seemed fidgety. When the deputy tried to detain him, Rhoney reportedly pushed him aside and ran away. When the deputy caught up to him, a scuffle ensued, and the deputy suffered multiple injuries before Rhoney was subdued. Documents state a sear
