CITYWIDE —A PROPOSED FIRE DEPARTMENT RULE REGARDING THE STORAGE OF E-BATTERIES is receiving public comments.
The FDNY is proposing Rule 3 RCNY § 309-01, titled “Uncertified Storage Batteries for Powered Mobility Devices,” which specifies requirements for the treatment of uncertified e-batteries, particularly lithium-ion ones, with regard to storage, handling, charging, transport, sale or possession. The rule essentially renders uncertified e-batteries illegal, and states that storage batteries and/or the devices of which they are a component must bear certification from the Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
The FDNY will also conduct a virtual public hearing, using the “Microsoft Teams” application, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Comments can be submitted via either the NYC rules we
