LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - In collaboration with the State of Michigan, the Lansing Fire Department is now offering a program to install smoke detectors in your home at no cost.
According to the Michigan Fire Inspectors Society, in 2024, 96 people died in 92 home fires, and of those deaths, only 19% of homes were reported to have working smoke alarms.
Mary Morgan is a resident of your average neighborhood in Lansing. But a tragic fire took the life of one of her neighbors last August, shocking the community.
“We know the family, and we were devastated to see the home in flames,” said Morgan. “Many of us from our street went up, and we were as helpful as we could [be], bringing water and supplies that possibly we could help meet some needs that day.”
