New rules for Town of Pelham’s use of artificial intelligence have been approved by councillors.

Under the policy, approval is required from the town’s information technology manager before any AI tools are used in corporate operations, the use of sensitive or confidential town data in AI systems is prohibited unless secure controls are in place, and the town must disclose when AI-generated content is used in public materials.

IT manager Mike Guglielmi told councillors the policy comes with a significant need for training on AI and its functions, calling it a “very important component” of successful implementation.

Pelham joins a growing number of Ontario municipalities adopting formal frameworks outlining how AI tools can be used to support public operations.
