GRAND FORKS — Judge Ted Sandberg said Martin Romo deserved to go to prison for years for a wild, high-speed chase through Grand Forks on May 7, calling it “homicidal.” But the judge cut Romo a break on Monday, Sept. 22, sentencing him to just a few months in jail.

Sandberg’s message to Romo in court was blunt.

“Because you didn’t want to get a ticket for insurance, yeah, that’s pretty foolish,” Sandberg said.

Romo, 22, told the court that was the reason he took off from police in May when they tried to stop him for speeding on DeMers Avenue.

The 5-mile chase went through residential neighborhoods and a busy Lincoln Park, including driving on the lawn and over a dike. Prosecutors said Romo blew through stop signs, weaved in and out of traffic, and ended the pursuit when he slammed into
