A man convicted of second-degree murder for brutally stabbing another man to death in Tofino nearly five years ago has been handed a life sentence with no eligibility for parole for 10 years.
It was December 2020 when 23-year-old Luke Priddle, on a three-day cocaine binge, went to the home of 47-year-old Matthew Phillips, who he’d met on a dating app.
The two got into an argument and Priddle stabbed Phillips 75 times, before returning the next day to set fire to the apartment he was living in.
Priddle was found guilty of second-degree murder, and on Monday a court justice handed him a mandatory life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 years, which is what his defence was calling for, while the Crown had recommended no eligibility of parole for a period of 15 years.
