BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Western North Dakota has a kids’ newspaper that is expanding to the eastern part of the state.

Kid Scoop News is written for kids and given to students in schools.

The North Dakota Newspaper Association (NDNA) publishes the paper to encourage more kids to read. The average rate of student reading proficiency in North Dakota is just 44%.

“We have to get back to the very basics, making sure we are a nation of good readers who can become good citizens and good workers. It is fundamental. I think most people are unaware of what this crisis is,” said Cecile Wehrman, NDNA executive director.

The NDNA plans to expand the paper to schools in the eastern part of the state. It is going to 95% of all schools in the western part of the state.
