More than 30 years after an alleged sexual assault of a female student, detectives have charged a former school teacher.

Detectives allege the male teacher sexually assaulted the teenage girl between 1990 and 1992 in Sydney's south-west suburbs.

The former teacher has been accused of assaulting the girl a number of times at a Varroville school and at a home in Ingleburn.

An investigation was launched into the alleged historical sexual assault in June 2023 when the offences were reported to police.

After more than two years of investigation, detectives arrested a 79-year-old man on September 22.

He was issued a court attendance notice for two counts of sexual assault , indecent assault of a person under 16 who is under authority and two counts of carnal knowledge, teacher of a girl
