PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) - The Pueblo Police Department says they’re having trouble filling empty positions and retaining officers because of childcare affordability.

So Pueblo Police Chief Chris Noeller is proposing to Pueblo City Council a way to help with childcare expenses.

On Monday night, Noeller is proposing an ordinance to City Council, that’s on its first reading, that if passed, would put $200,000 of funding towards helping officers with the cost of childcare.

If approved, police officials say the funds would support both families and the workforce.

The grant is funded by the Department of Public Safety’s SMART program, which helps police departments throughout the state recruit and train officers.

According to the ordinance, right now, the police department only has 189 POST-ce
