Victoria’s former chief health officer has conceded many measures intended to stop the spread of Covid-19 were “probably never necessary”.
Dr Brett Sutton was the public face of Victoria’s response to the pandemic, appearing almost daily alongside former Premier Daniel Andrews during the three years in which Melbourne's five million residents spent 262 days in lockdown.
In an interview with former Melbourne radio host Neil Mitchell, Dr Sutton described the period as a “horror show”, and while decisions were made on the best information available there was a long list of things he had gotten wrong.
“There's no shying away from the fact that you can't get everything right, as I certainly didn't,” he said.
