BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - North Dakota’s severe thunderstorm season was slow to start this spring, but summer was a very different story, especially when looking back at the record-breaking number of tornadoes.
Our severe weather season really ramped up in mid-June and has continued even into September. In North Dakota, there have been over 200 reports of wind gusts over 58 miles per hour from severe thunderstorms, and over 100 reports of hail over an inch in diameter. But the big one has been the tornadoes. There have been 75 confirmed, as of September 21st. The number of tornadoes and damaging wind gusts this year is well above the 30-year average.
But North Dakota isn’t the only one with a busy season. There have been four other states with more preliminary tornado reports — Texas, Illi
