HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -A new facility opened this school year for students at Meadows Elementary to call home.

The Cabell County Board of Education has a plan to keep children safe in the area long term.

“Student safety is obviously paramount. You know, anytime that children are in school we want to make sure they’re safe,” Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell said.

Huntington City Council went through with the first reading of an ordinance on Monday to annex the property of the new school and a couple nearby roadways.

Farrell said Cabell County Schools wants to keep students safe, and annexing would give students protection from the city’s first responders.
