The special guests Monday at Life Circle Adult Day Center had soft coats, four legs and hooves that clip-clopped across the floor.

The center’s clients — primarily older adults with dementia — sat in a half-circle on an outdoor patio to welcome miniature horses Thor and Hot Dog from Cerrillos-based nonprofit My Little Horse Listener.

The nonprofit operates “equine-facilitated learning” programs, said Liz Delfs, the organization’s founder and executive director. Although the group primarily serves youth on site, Hot Dog and Thor sometimes load into a trailer and hit the road, building human-equine connections as they go.

“They can have a sensitivity toward humans that’s really, really amazing,” Delfs said.
