Round-the-clock speed cameras issued 55,899 tickets in six months of operation but there’s a more remarkable number.

The same cameras could have issued another 1,963,097 tickets if every speeder received one.

Just three per cent of drivers found to be exceeding speed limits at 17 schools are receiving tickets, according to government data for tickets issued between Feb. 3 and July 31.

This means 97 per cent of drivers disobeying the limit are escaping tickets after cameras measure their speed.

You might ask: are cameras so poor they never capture a clear picture of a licence plate?

Not so, the government says. It says it hasn’t hired enough staff to prosecute every speeder.
