Central Park in Preston will glow with handmade lanterns this weekend as the Preston Lantern Project returns for its third year.

The event brings together dozens of jars and bamboo lanterns created by residents in free workshops across Cambridge.

Organizers expect nearly 180 lanterns to be on display Saturday, Sept. 27, a big increase from the 15 that lit up the park in the project’s first year.

“It’s a community art project,” said organizer Jessica Penney. “We host several free workshops leading up to the event, where we encourage different groups and community members to make lanterns. The exhibition grows every year, and it’s just a beautiful representation of our community.”
