CARTHAGE, New York (WWNY) - A sea of purple takes off from the Carthage Recreation Park, marking the start of the annual 5K Run/Walk for Recovery.

“I like to walk as a big group and just have some people honk, and ‘Hey!,’ and just know that we’re here. These people are not forgotten,” said Amber Yancey.

People like Amber Yancey’s son, Keegan Willis.

He died from an accidental fentanyl overdose six years ago.

“He was the life of the party, he was a peacemaker, he loved sports, and he just wanted to be friends with everybody,” said Yancey.

Every year, on September 22nd, the anniversary of Keegan’s death, dozens of his friends and family came together in memory of Keegan, including a group from the ARC of Lewis County.
