Chicago Cubs rookie third baseman Matt Shaw missed Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds in order to attend the memorial service held for Charlie Kirk.
The Cubs lost the game 1-0, and while no official reason was given as to why Shaw was not with the Cubs on Sunday, The Athletic reports that he was away from the team to attend Kirk’s service.
Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist, was shot and killed in Utah on Sept. 10 during the first stop of his American Comeback Tour on college campuses.
The memorial service for Kirk was held in Arizona on Sunday.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell acknowledged that Matt Shaw missed Sunday’s game against the Reds to attend a funeral but did not say whose funeral it was.
“Matt Shaw was unavailable today,” Counsell said, according to The Athletic.
