HOUSTON — Beachgoers are spotting a rare and massive jellyfish along the Texas coast this week, and it’s turning heads for both its size and its striking appearance.

The species, nicknamed the “pink meanie,” can weigh more than 50 pounds and stretch tentacles up to 70 feet long. In the water, they resemble floating cotton candy.

Jace Tunnell with the Harte Research Institute shared on social media that he found more than 10 pink meanies over just 10 miles of beach during a beachcombing trip. He also spotted one in a Port Aransas marina wrapped around a moon jellyfish — their favorite food.
