The assassination of Charlie Kirk and its aftermath reverberated at the Orangeburg City Council's monthly meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The council is considering an ordinance against hate intimidation, as several other municipalities and counties in South Carolina are also doing or have done, in the absence of a state law against such activity.

The ordinance would make it illegal for a person to "cause the fear of harm, injury, or damage to the victim's person or property because of the victim's actual or perceived race, ethnicity, national origin, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, or physical and mental disability, whether or not the perception is correct."
