Ontario Apple season is peaking, and this year’s crop promises to be sweeter and more flavourful than usual, according to Apple Growers Ontario.
In a news release , the association representing 200 commercial apple farmers in Ontario said early reports indicate an excellent fall crop thanks to a hot, dry summer with cooler late-summer nights.
Why apples are sweeter this year
“The growing conditions this year have really worked in our favour,” said Chris Hedges, Ontario Apple Growers chair. “The summer heat helped with flavour development and boosted sugar levels, and the cooler temperatures now are bringing out beautiful colour in the fruit,” the Norfolk County apple farmer added. “The early apples we’re harvesting are of very high quality — about as good a crop as it could be.”
